Seeding Medfield's Open Ground
Hydroseeding in Medfield has a big project in town to watch. The Medfield State Hospital opened in 1896 on 685 acres of pasture and closed in 2003. The town bought 128 acres of it in 2014, published a reuse plan in 2018, and in 2022 sold about 45 acres, including the core campus, for development. Projects like that mean grading, stormwater basins and a lot of soil that has to be stabilized.
Construction on old grounds
Former institutional land often has compacted soil, old foundations and patchy fill. On redevelopment sites the silt fence and catch basin protection go in early, stockpiles that will sit for weeks get seeded, and we hydroseed slopes and lawns as each area is finished. Steeper basin walls get bonded fiber matrix or a staked blanket.
The Charles on a third of the town
The Charles River borders almost one-third of Medfield and forms the line with Millis. Yards and building sites that slope toward it need sediment barriers until grass covers the ground. The hospital grounds themselves include river access through a state-owned parcel.
Hills in the northeast
Rocky Woods, a 491-acre reservation in the northeast, rises to Cedar Hill at 435 feet, and Noon Hill reaches 370 feet. Homes on these hillsides deal with stony ground and slopes steeper than the river side of town. We rake out surface stone, add loam, and use extra mulch on the grade.
Meadow history
When settlers left Dedham to found Medfield in 1649, they paid for meadow rights along the river. Those river meadows still shape the town's open land. Homeowners near them sometimes prefer a native or meadow mix on outer areas, which we can spray alongside a regular lawn.

Medfield Questions
Can you seed basins and slopes on the hospital redevelopment?
Yes. We work with builders on perimeter controls, temporary seed and final hydroseeding of slopes and lawns.
My lot near Rocky Woods is stony and steep. What do you do?
We clear surface stones, add loam, and on the steep section we either thicken the mulch or lay a blanket.
Do yards near the Charles need anything extra?
A sediment barrier on the river side during work and prompt seeding after grading.
Can you plant a meadow area at the back of our property?
Yes. We spray a native or meadow mix there and a regular lawn mix near the house.
