Lawns on Newton's Drumlin Hills
Hydroseeding in Newton often follows a teardown or a big addition. When an older house on Waban Hill or Chestnut Hill is replaced, the yard is left as compacted fill and torn-up slope. A hydroseeding company can cover that ground in one visit with seed, fiber mulch and tackifier that holds on a grade where loose straw would slide.
Why the hills matter
Newton sits in the Boston Basin lowland, ringed by drumlins left by the last glacier about 12,000 years ago. The city names seven main rises, including Nonantum Hill, Oak Hill, Bald Pate Hill and Mount Ida. Drumlins are built of packed till. USDA describes upland till soils like the Paxton series as having a firm, brittle layer below the surface where water can perch for short periods from late fall to early spring. On a Newton hillside that means the topsoil above can stay wet while the slope below sheds water fast.
Slope stabilization
On moderate grades we spray a heavier hydromulch rate. On steep cuts beside a new driveway or retaining wall we may recommend bonded fiber matrix, or a staked blanket laid over the seed. Either way, the goal is to keep the top inch in place through the first few heavy rains.
Rain totals
Newton averages about 53.6 inches of precipitation a year, with March the wettest month. That is plenty of water for grass once it is up, but it also means a bare lot in spring will lose soil quickly. We like to seed in late summer, when storms are fewer and soil is still warm.
Near the water
The Charles River runs along the north and west sides of the city, and Crystal Lake in Newton Centre covers 33 acres. Lots that drain toward either one get silt fence or compost sock along the downhill edge until the lawn fills in.
Stone walls and scenic roads
Newton protects trees and historic stone walls along designated scenic roads such as Hammond Street and Lake Avenue. We grade and seed around walls by hand rather than pushing material over them.

- Seven hills. The city lists seven principal elevations, among them Nonantum, Waban, Chestnut and Oak Hill.
- Wet springs. Average yearly precipitation is about 53.59 inches, with March the wettest month at 5.58 inches.
- Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake in Newton Centre is a 33-acre natural lake, once called Wiswall's Pond.
- Till subsoil. USDA notes water may perch for brief periods on the dense layer of Paxton-type till soils from late fall to early spring.

Newton Questions
My new driveway left a steep bank. What holds seed there?
A heavier hydromulch rate works on moderate grades. On steeper banks, bonded fiber matrix or a blanket under the seed keeps soil from slipping until roots take over.
Why does part of my yard stay soggy in April?
Hill soils here often have a dense till layer below. Water can sit on it in early spring. We look at grading and topsoil depth before seeding so the new lawn does not drown in that spot.
Can you seed after a teardown before the landscaper finishes?
Yes, as long as final grading is done. Seeding early protects the bare soil while planting and hardscape wrap up.
Do I need silt fence if I am near Crystal Lake?
If your yard drains toward the lake or a storm drain that feeds it, a sediment barrier on the low side is a sensible step until grass covers the soil.
Will you work around old stone walls?
Yes. We fine grade near walls by hand and keep machines and spoil away from them.
