New Grass for a Town That Keeps Rebuilding
Hydroseeding in Wellesley is mostly about putting a yard back together. The town has seen a steady run of rebuilding: a historic inn replaced by condominiums in 2006, the Wellesley Country Club clubhouse rebuilt in 2008, a new high school finished in 2012 and the old Linden Street strip mall turned into Linden Square. Private homes follow the same pattern, and every addition or new foundation leaves bare soil behind.
After the excavator leaves
A yard that has carried trucks and dumpsters for months is compacted and patchy. Before we spray, we loosen the surface, pull out construction debris, and spread topsoil where the original layer was stripped. Then the hydroseed slurry goes down in one even coat, with mulch that shows exactly where seed has landed.
Snow and plow damage
Wellesley averages about 62 inches of snow a year, more than the city of Boston. Plow piles along driveways and road edges leave sand, salt and scraped turf in spring. Spot hydroseeding and overseeding those strips is quicker than re-sodding, and the mulch helps the seed stay put through April rain.
Climate and timing
The town has a warm-summer humid continental climate with about 48.7 inches of precipitation spread over roughly 135 wet days. Cool-season grasses do best when sprayed from late August into September, which gives them a full fall to root before frost.
A landscape tradition
Wellesley College's campus overlooks Lake Waban, and its layout was shaped by glaciated topography, a series of meadows and native plant communities, with a 1921 plan involving Olmsted. Many homeowners here want the same relaxed look. Where a full lawn is not needed, we can seed a low-mow or meadow-style mix on banks and back corners.

Wellesley Questions
Our contractor left the yard compacted. Can you still seed it?
Yes, but we loosen the soil first. Seed sprayed on hard-packed ground tends to wash off or dry out before it roots.
Can you fix the strip the snowplow tore up?
Yes. We rake out sand and debris, add a little topsoil if needed, and hydroseed the strip. Spring or early fall both work.
Is overseeding enough, or do I need a whole new lawn?
If at least half the yard still has healthy grass, overseeding usually does it. When weeds or bare dirt have taken over most of it, starting fresh with a renovation gives you more for the money.
Can you plant a meadow look instead of turf on a back slope?
Yes. A low-mow or meadow-style mix suits banks and edges where you do not want to push a mower.
