Large Lawns in a Rural-Feeling Town

Hydroseeding in Sudbury fits the town's lot sizes. One-acre zoning kept Sudbury rural through the 1970s and 1980s, and many homes still sit on an acre or more. Covering that much ground with sod is slow and costly; a hydroseed lawn can be sprayed across a large yard in a single visit.

Sod vs hydroseed on a big lot

Sod gives an instant look but has to be laid roll by roll and watered heavily for weeks. Hydroseed costs less per square foot, roots into your own soil from day one, and lets us shape the seed mix for sun, shade and wet corners. On an acre lot that difference adds up. Your written estimate will show both if you want to compare.

Wetlands everywhere

Much of the wetland in the northern half of town and along the Hop Brook corridor was kept as open space. Hop Brook runs from the southwest part of town through the King Philip Historic District into the Sudbury River, which forms the border with Wayland. Projects near these areas need sediment control set before any grading. Silt fence and catch basin protection go in first, and we leave them standing until the grass is up.

Growing heritage

Sudbury was once one of the largest carnation-growing towns, with many greenhouse operations. A few old greenhouse and farm sites have since become house lots, and their soils can be uneven: rich in some spots, compacted or full of debris in others. We test and amend before seeding.

Hills and high ground

The highest point in town is on the north slope of Nobscot Hill. Lots on its flanks have more slope and stone than the flat ground near the river. Those yards may need a blanket or extra hydromulch on the steeper parts.

Redevelopment

The former Raytheon research site, used from 1958 to 2016, and a buried transmission line that helped pay for the 7.6-mile rail trail section paved in 2025 show that large parcels in town still change hands. Commercial and builder hydroseeding on these sites follows the same approach as our residential work, at a bigger scale.

Sudbury Questions

Is hydroseed really cheaper than sod for an acre?

In most cases, yes, by a wide margin per square foot. Your written quote sets the price for your yard, and we can quote sod for comparison.

How long until I can mow a large hydroseeded yard?

Most lawns are ready for a first high mow in four to six weeks, depending on weather and watering.

Do I need silt fence if my lot backs onto wetland?

Usually, yes. A barrier on the wet side keeps soil out of the resource area while the lawn grows in.

My house sits on an old greenhouse site. Is the soil OK?

It varies. We dig test spots, remove debris and add topsoil where the ground is poor before seeding.

Can you water an acre of new seed?

We do not provide watering, but we will lay out a zone-by-zone schedule so you can water a big lawn in sections.
