Lawns on Weston's Rocky Terrain

Hydroseeding in Weston deals with ground that early settlers found hard to farm. The town's rocky topography offered little useful farmland, which is part of why wealthy families built country estates here starting in the 1860s. That same stony ground is under many lawns today.

Stony soil

Much of Weston's upland is glacial till. USDA describes the Charlton series, a common till soil in Massachusetts, as stony to very stony in places, with rock fragments making up 5 to 35 percent of the soil to about a meter deep. Before seeding we rake out what we can, bring in topsoil where ledge or stone sits close to the surface, and spray seed and mulch over the finished grade. Hydroseed settles into the gaps between stones better than sod lies over them.

Estates turned into lots

After World War II, highway building and housing demand led to the subdivision of estates and farms. More than half of Weston's homes were built between 1950 and 1979. Those houses are now being renovated or rebuilt, and big-lot rebuilds mean large areas of bare soil, long driveways and cut slopes.

Slopes and long drives

Cut banks along driveways get staked blankets or bonded fiber matrix. On gentler areas, a heavy hydromulch rate does the job. Large lots often need silt fence along the downhill property line until the new lawn is thick.

Conservation land on the property line

More than 2,000 acres, about 18 percent of the town, is preserved as parks, fields, wetlands and forest, laced with 90 miles of trails. Many yards back onto that land. We keep seed and mulch out of the woods, and on request we use a native mix on the edge where lawn meets conservation land.

Scenic roads

Thirty-seven Weston roads are designated scenic, which protects trees and stone walls along them. We plan grading near the road edge with that in mind.

Weston Questions

Can grass grow over ledge?

It needs soil depth. Where ledge is close to the surface we add topsoil so roots have room, then hydroseed the area.

Do you remove all the stones before seeding?

We rake out loose stones on the surface. Buried rock stays unless it is in the way of grading.

How do you handle a steep driveway cut?

By laying a staked blanket or spraying BFM over the seed, so the bank holds through heavy rain.

Our yard backs onto town conservation land. Can you keep seed out of the woods?

Yes. We control the spray carefully along the edge and can use a native mix there if you prefer.
