Keeping Soil Out of Lake Massapoag
Hydroseeding in Sharon often comes with a lake to think about. Lake Massapoag is one of the town's best-known features and was largely responsible for Sharon's early growth as a summer resort. Massapoag Brook drains it to the north and the Canoe River to the south, so runoff from homes around the lake feeds two stream systems.
Lakeside lots
Many former summer cottages around the lake have been expanded or rebuilt into year-round homes. Those projects leave steep, bare ground running down toward the water. We set silt fence or compost sock at the low edge first, grade gently, and hydroseed right away. On the steepest banks, an erosion control blanket goes under the seed.
Conservation land and trails
Sharon has a high share of conservation land, crossed by the Massapoag Trail, the Warner Trail, the Bay Circuit Trail and King Philip's Rock Trail, plus land in Borderland State Park and Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary. Lots next to these areas are usually wooded. A shade-tolerant mix and good topsoil under the trees give the best result, and we keep mulch and seed off public land.
Higher ground
Sharon sits at about 249 feet, higher than the coastal towns to the east. Its humid continental climate brings a mean January low around 18 degrees and about 50 inches of precipitation a year. We time seeding for late summer and early fall so roots develop before the ground freezes.
Native seeding
On wooded edges and slopes that do not need to be mowed, a native grass or wildflower mix fits the character of the town and the trail corridors. It costs a little more time to establish but less to maintain.

Sharon Questions
Our yard drops straight to the lake. What stops the soil from ending up in the water?
We install a sediment barrier at the bottom before grading, seed as soon as grading ends, and use a blanket on the steepest part.
Can a lawn grow in our wooded yard near Moose Hill?
Yes, in areas with a few hours of sun. We use a shade blend and add topsoil where tree roots have thinned the soil.
Do you plant native mixes?
Yes. They work well on wooded edges and slopes you do not plan to mow.
We converted a summer cottage. Can you redo the whole yard?
Yes. We handle grading, topsoil and hydroseeding in one project.
